Planning for Growth
There is tremendous opportunity on the horizon. When Crossrail 2 opens, Wimbledon will be fifteen minutes from Central London.
This could transform the town centre. At last year’s conference people talked about what Wimbledon already offers, its quality of life and about capitalizing on the town’s international brand to encourage inward investment and support for carefully managed, planned growth. We also heard arguments for improving the quality and range of public space in Wimbledon.
We recognise that despite being a successful town centre, Wimbledon must evolve to sustain its success, by responding to the needs of a changing demographic, by rising to the challenge of Crossrail 2 and by differentiating itself from other town centres.
We anticipate the competition will bring fresh ideas on how Wimbledon station precinct may be remodelled to be a vibrant hub of commercial activity fit for the 21st century.
